Supplemental Baby Foods

Supplemental baby foods are semi-solid foods given to infants typically starting around 6 months of age as they begin to need more nutrients than breast milk or formula alone can provide. These foods include pureed fruits and vegetables, iron-fortified cereals, and other soft, easy-to-digest options that help transition babies to a more varied diet.

1. Iron Fortification: Since iron stores from birth start to deplete around 6 months, iron-fortified foods like baby cereal are important for preventing deficiency.

2. Texture Graduation: Start with smooth purees before gradually moving to lumpier textures as your baby's chewing skills develop, to aid in oral motor development.

3. Variety and Balance: Introduce a wide variety of flavors and nutrients to foster a balanced diet and help prevent future pickiness.

Choose supplemental baby foods with minimal added sugars and low sodium content . Preferably, select organic options to avoid potential exposure to pesticides and opt for products with a simple list of ingredients. Always check for the absence of artificial additives and preservatives.
