Cakes, Pastries/Pies

Devi Gajendran (Lead Clinical Nutritionist @truthin)

Commercial cakes, pastries, and pies often contain preservatives like Butylated Hydroxyanisole (INS 320), Sodium Metabisulphate(INS 223), Potassium Sorbate (INS 202), Calcium Propionate(INS 282), Sodium Benzoate (INS 211), Calcium Benzoate (INS 213) and Potassium Benzoate (INS212) to prevent mold / bacterial growth and increase the shelf life. Though used in small quantities and approved for GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) usage, these can be potentially harmful especially in children, elderly and individuals with specific digestive and respiratory ailments and related conditions.
